چکیده
Leaf-cutting ants depend on mutualisticfungi to survive. An infection that massively affects the workers compromising proper maintenance of fungus, or can attack fungus garden, be fatal colony. Thus, leaf-cutting have evolved a complex defense system composed both innate individual immunity and collective protect colony against potential threats. To characterize Atta cephalotes Metarizhium anisopliae we assessed hygienic behavior expression antimicrobial peptides A. triggered by spores. As control challenge, were treated with water. Regardless whether challenge was water spore suspension, displayed an immediate response characterized increase in time spent self-grooming grooming along reduction fungus-grooming. The abaecin as early 24 hours post-infection, exclusively challenged M. . In contrast, level defensin remained constant. These results suggest upon being suspension s , deploy produce invader. However, when spores are applied liquid deploys generic strategy, while shows specific this entomopathogen.

Isoenzymatic polymorphism in the leaf-cutting ant Atta capiguara Gonçalves (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).
This study was carried out to analyze the genetic population structure of Atta capiguara from 12 nests collected in Tapejara in the state of Paraná, Brazil, using isoenzyme polymorphisms. The analyzed isoenzymes were esterases (EST-EC 3.1.1.1), acid phosphatase (ACP-EC 3.1.3.2) and carbonic anhydrase (CA-EC 4.2.1.1). Ten loci were found in A.capiguara and four polymorphic loci were detected. Th...
متن کاملForager size of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in a mature eucalyptus forest in Brazil.
We determined the size characteristics of foragers of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens in a mature eucalyptus forest in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, at daytime (7:30 to 10:00 hr) and nighttime (19:00 to 23:00 hr). There were no significant differences between daytime and nighttime ant mass (Ma), but leaf fragment mass (Ml) and burden (B = [Ma + Ml]/Ma), which indicates ...
متن کاملWaste management in the leaf-cutting ant Atta colombica
Unlike most leaf-cutting ants, which have underground waste dumps, the leaf-cutting ant Atta colombica dumps waste in a heap outside the nest. Waste is hazardous, as it is contaminated with pathogens. We investigated the organization of the workforce involved in outside-nest tasks (foraging, waste disposal) and quantified task switching and heap location to test hypotheses that these tasks are ...
متن کاملEffect of Tithonia diversifolia Mulch on Atta cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Nests
Recent studies have shown an insecticidal effect of Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) Gray (Asterales: Asteraceae) foliage on workers of Atta cephalotes L. and inhibitory effects of this plant on the growth of the symbiotic fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus (A. Müler) Singer. To evaluate the potential of T. diversifolia as a biological control treatment of this important pest, we assessed the eff...
متن کاملMating biology of the leaf-cutting ants Atta colombica and A. cephalotes.
Copulation behavior has often been shaped by sexually selected sperm competition or cryptic female choice. However, manipulation of previously deposited ejaculates is unknown in the social Hymenoptera and the degree to which sperm competes after insemination or is actively selected by females has remained ambiguous. We studied the mating process in the leaf-cutting ants Atta colombica and A. ce...
